Massive Wildlife Smuggling Operation Foiled Near Assam-Mizoram Border
Silchar, March 30, 2024: In a coordinated effort between Assam Police and Forest Officials of Hailakandi Division, a significant wildlife smuggling operation was thwarted on March 29th. Authorities successfully rescued a total of 52 Indonesian birds and animals, including rare species such as Black Lori birds, Red and Blue Lories, Babirusa Swine, and Hornbills.
The operation unfolded near the Assam-Mizoram border in Hailakandi, culminating in the arrest of two smugglers. The perpetrators attempted to evade capture by breaking through police barricades in a four-wheeler. However, forest department personnel of Haikandi Division swiftly pursued and intercepted the vehicle, leading to the apprehension of the individuals and the rescue of the endangered creatures.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the police indicate that the seized species originate from Indonesia, although expert confirmation is pending. Among the rescued animals, 42 are Red and Blue Lories, 6 are Black Lories, 2 are Hornbills, and one is a Babirusa, an Indonesian swine species.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Moinuddin Ali and Samsul Haque, both residents of Assam’s Hojai area. It is revealed that the consignment originated from Indonesia, traversing through Myanmar before entering India via Mizoram. Authorities suspect the intended destination to be West Bengal.
Following standard protocol, the police handed over the confiscated birds and animals to the forest department and have initiated legal proceedings by registering a case against the smugglers.
