9 Indian Ports Enter Global Top 100 in Container Port Performance Index
Desk Report, June 20, 2024: In a significant milestone, nine Indian ports have been featured in the Global Top 100 in the latest Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2023, prepared by the World Bank and S & P Global Market Intelligence. This recognition underscores the remarkable progress of India’s maritime infrastructure and operational efficiency.
Visakhapatnam Port has demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving 27.5 moves per crane hour, a turnaround time (TRT) of 21.4 hours, and minimal berth idle time. These metrics underscore the port’s proficiency in handling container ships, influencing customer preference significantly.
Apart from Visakhapatnam, seven other Indian ports have secured positions within the top 100. Mundra Port is ranked 27th, Pipavav Port is ranked 41st, followed by Kamarajar 47th, Cochin 63rd, Hazira 68th, Krishnapatnam 71st, Chennai 80th, and Jawaharlal Nehru 96th. This collective achievement marks a significant enhancement in India’s maritime capabilities.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, attributed this success to the ambitious Sagarmala programme, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The programme has focused on modernising the nation’s ports, improving their efficiency, and enhancing their operational capabilities.
“This is a tremendous achievement for Indian ports and is a testament to the efforts taken by the PM Narendra Modi-led government to modernize and mechanise the ports to improve their performance in the handling of ships and cargo,” stated Minister Sonowal.
He further highlighted the impact of initiatives like Sagarmala in incorporating new technologies and green infrastructure, ensuring the sustainability and stability of India’s maritime industry. “With sustained effort in this regard, we are confident that the Indian maritime sector will further improve the resilience and efficiency of maritime gateways and boost port-led economic development,” Sonowal added.
This accomplishment reflects the ongoing transformation of India’s port infrastructure and its growing significance in the global maritime landscape.
