PM Modi Unveils 109 High-Yielding, Climate-Resilient Crop Varieties, Highlights Value Addition in Agriculture
Desk Report, August 11, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced 109 new crop varieties designed to be high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified. The release took place at the India Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. PM Modi highlighted the vital role of value addition in agriculture, emphasizing its significance to the sector’s growth.
The Prime Minister interacted with farmers and scientists, discussing the benefits of these new crops. Farmers expressed optimism, noting that the varieties would reduce costs and positively impact the environment. The scientists, who developed these varieties, followed the PM’s guidance to incorporate underutilized crops into mainstream agriculture.
PM Modi underscored the growing demand for nutritious and organic food, pointing to the rising popularity of millets and natural farming. He encouraged Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) to regularly update farmers on the benefits of these new crops, enhancing awareness and adoption.
The 109 varieties include 61 crops, featuring 34 field crops such as cereals, millets, pulses, and oilseeds, alongside 27 horticultural crops like fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to advancing sustainable and resilient agriculture in India.
