5 Dead, 1 Seriously Injured in Fatal Road Accident in Kachugaon

Gossaigaon, August 12, 2024: A devastating road accident near Mahamaya Temple in Kachugaon, Gossaigaon, on National Highway 27, has claimed the lives of five individuals and left one person critically injured. The collision occurred when a truck plowed into a group of devotees returning to their vehicle after prayers at the temple.

The deceased have been identified as Sukra Roy (20), Jai Roy (11), Bappi Ghosh (21), Basudev Roy (22), and Naba Ghosh (26), all residents of Hatigarh village, Gossaigaon. Binan Roy (22) is the sole survivor of the incident. He sustained severe injuries and was transported to Kachugaon Primary Hospital by police for urgent medical care.

Gossaigaon Sub-Divisional Police Officer Hiren Kumar Deka and the Kachugaon Police responded swiftly to the scene, managing the situation and initiating an investigation. The truck involved in the accident bears registration number RJ 10GC 0217.

In the wake of the tragedy, residents of Gurufela have taken to the streets, blocking the highway in protest. They are demanding justice for the victims and accountability for the driver. The blockade has caused a significant traffic disruption, stranding hundreds of goods-laden trucks on the highway.

Assam Chief Minister expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “I am deeply pained by the passing away of five Bol Bum devotees in a freak accident near Mahamaya Temple, Kachugaon. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members in this hour of grief.”

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with local authorities working diligently to hold those responsible accountable and address the concerns of the affected community.
