Assam CM Hoists Tricolour on 78th Independence Day, Stresses Self-Reliance and Indigenous Rights
Guwahati, August 15, 2024: The 78th Independence Day was commemorated in Assam with Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma hoisting the national flag at Khanapara. The Chief Minister reviewed the Guard of Honour and observed the marching contingents from various units participating in the celebration. Additionally, he awarded recognitions to individuals from diverse services for their exceptional contributions.
In his address, Chief Minister Sarma underscored Assam’s progress towards self-reliance and development. He highlighted the state’s ability to tackle persistent issues such as flooding without central government assistance, reaffirming his commitment to fulfilling electoral promises despite facing political and personal adversities.
Sarma reflected on Assam’s transformation, focusing on maintaining the state’s demographic balance and safeguarding the rights of its indigenous people. He expressed concern over demographic changes, noting a decline in the Hindu population to 57 percent, while the Muslim population has increased to 41 percent. The Chief Minister urged efforts to preserve the traditional environment and support Assam’s Satra culture, which he described as integral to the state’s identity.
The Chief Minister announced several key initiatives, including the launch of Mission Basundhara 3.0 on October 2, aimed at reducing land-related disputes and ensuring land in Guwahati remains with indigenous people. He revealed plans for establishing 74 new sub-divisions or districts and designating Chiknajhar as the 8th National Park in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD). Additionally, a State Domicile Policy will prioritize indigenous candidates for government jobs.
Addressing environmental concerns, Sarma noted the impact of hill mining in Meghalaya on Guwahati’s water issues and the problem of artificial flooding due to plastic waste in drains. He urged citizens to raise awareness and take action to mitigate these issues, suggesting that avoiding construction on drains and reducing plastic waste could alleviate 20 percent of artificial flooding.
In conclusion, Chief Minister Sarma reaffirmed his commitment to Assam’s development and safety, vowing to protect the interests of its indigenous population and work towards a balanced and prosperous future for the state.
