Assam Aims to Become the Nation’s Skills Capital by 2026
Guwahati, August 18, 2024: Assam is on a mission to establish itself as the Nation’s Skills Capital by 2026. The state government plans to increase the number of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) from 132 in 2022 to 250 by 2026. This expansion will add 50,000 seats, a significant increase from the current 24,000 seats. Additionally, the government intends to enhance Career Centres and incorporate short-term skilling programs to ensure a more cohesive skill development strategy.
Seven Strategic Pathways for Skill Development
To achieve this ambitious goal, Assam has outlined seven key strategies:
1. Innovative Financial Models: The state will introduce skill vouchers to ITI students to make education more accessible.
2. Convergence and IT Model: District Youth and Women Centres (DYWCs) will be created with integrated data systems under the Assam Skill Development Mission (ASDM).
3. Vocational Education: Skill Hubs will be developed in schools and colleges, focusing on vocational training.
4. Market-Relevant Skilling: A skill census will be conducted to tailor training programs to market demands.
5. Capacity and Infrastructure: ITIs in underserved areas will be expanded and modernized.
6. Flexible Skilling: Courses with flexible entry and exit points will be offered at Assam Skill University (ASU).
7. Branding and Communication: The government will promote skills through Skill Yatras and partnerships with major corporations like Intel, IBM, Schneider, SAS, and PepsiCo.
These strategic pathways are expected to drive Assam’s transformation into a leading state for skill development, offering enhanced opportunities for its youth and contributing to the nation’s overall growth.
