BSF and Meghalaya Police Seize 74,000 Kgs of Sugar Meant for Smuggling into Bangladesh
Desk Report, August 26, 2024: In a significant crackdown, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Meghalaya Police jointly intercepted a large consignment of sugar intended for smuggling into Bangladesh. The operation, carried out in East Khasi Hills district, resulted in the seizure of 74,000 kilograms of sugar and the arrest of two Indian nationals.
Acting on intelligence, BSF troops in the Lyngkhat border area identified three trucks loaded with sugar. The trucks, suspected of being used for illegal export, were promptly intercepted. Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the cargo was intended for smuggling into Bangladesh.
The seized sugar, totaling 74,000 kilograms, and the two apprehended individuals were immediately handed over to the Meghalaya Police. This operation marks a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to curb cross-border smuggling in the region.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify the broader network involved in this smuggling attempt. The joint effort between the BSF and Meghalaya Police underscores the importance of collaboration in maintaining border security and preventing illegal activities.
