Assam CM Sarma Slams Mamata Banerjee’s Remarks, Warns Against Destabilizing Politics
Guwahati, August 29, 2024: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday for her provocative remarks. Banerjee had suggested that the ongoing protests in Kolkata could lead to a crisis similar to the Bangladesh upheaval, sparking Sarma’s strong reaction.
Sarma accused Banerjee of attempting to destabilize India through what he called her “politics of failure.” Responding to Banerjee’s claim that unrest in Bengal could trigger chaos in Assam and Delhi, Sarma condemned the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader’s statements. In a fiery tweet, he warned, “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t show us red eyes. Don’t even try to burn India with your politics of failure. It is unbecoming of you to speak divisive language.”
Banerjee made her controversial remarks during a speech at the foundation day event of the TMC’s student wing. She criticized the BJP for the violence that occurred during the recent bandh and the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march to the state secretariat. The TMC government is already under intense scrutiny following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Hospital, which has led to widespread protests.
