Assam Assembly Passes Bills on Marriage Registration and Preservation of Heritage Sites
Guwahati, August 30, 2024: The Assam Assembly has approved two significant bills: the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages & Divorces Bill, 2024, and the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation Bill, 2024. These legislations are designed to protect Assam’s identity from extinction.
The first bill aims to safeguard young girls by closing loopholes that allowed child marriages. This legislation will act as a protective measure, ensuring that all Muslim marriages and divorces are officially registered. The second bill focuses on preserving the environment around cultural heritage sites, such as Mandirs and Namghars, that are at least 250 years old. These sites are crucial to Assam’s cultural identity and require protection from encroachment.
Reclaiming Assam’s identity from illegal settlers has been a persistent effort by the state government. Moving forward, the legislative agenda of Assam includes further measures to end polygamy and secure land rights for Dalits and Adivasis.
“Our government is complementing legislative achievements with decisive executive actions,” stated Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He highlighted that over 3,000 individuals have been arrested for their involvement in child marriages, and 167 square kilometers of land have been reclaimed from encroachers.
