Assam Vigilance Traps Drugs Inspector in Jorhat for Bribery
Desk Report, August 31, 2024: The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, has taken a decisive step in its ongoing battle against corruption by apprehending Tejendra Saikia, the Inspector of Drugs in Jorhat district. Saikia was caught red-handed at his office after he accepted a bribe from a local pharmacy owner. The inspector allegedly demanded the bribe to allow the complainant to continue running his pharmacy without any interference, highlighting a blatant abuse of power in the state’s drug regulatory system.
The operation was carried out based on a complaint lodged by the pharmacy owner, who had become frustrated with Saikia’s repeated demands for illegal payments. Upon receiving the complaint, the Vigilance & Anti-Corruption team meticulously planned the trap, ensuring that the corrupt official had no room to escape. The moment Saikia accepted the marked currency notes, the team swooped in, catching him in the act and securing vital evidence to support their case.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in Assam’s fight against corruption, especially within regulatory bodies that are supposed to protect public health. The arrest of Tejendra Saikia sends a strong message to other officials who may be tempted to engage in similar corrupt practices. The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption has vowed to continue its efforts to root out corruption and restore public trust in the system.
