Assam Government to Convert 24,000 Contractual Teachers to Permanent Staff
Guwahati, September 01, 2024: The Assam Government is set to regularize the jobs of approximately 24,000 contractual teachers working in primary schools across the state. This significant move was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a Facebook live session on Saturday. The regularization is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Assam’s education system.
The ceremonial distribution of appointment letters to the selected teachers will take place at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati. Reflecting on the development, Chief Minister Sarma noted that September 2 will mark a major achievement for Assam.
“When I was the state education minister, we provided recruitment opportunities to many teachers under the Sarba Shiksha Abhiyaan. Today, around 35,000 teachers continue to work under this scheme. There have been concerns and controversies since 2011-2012 regarding the job security of these teachers. On September 2, we will bring around 24,000 teachers under government coverage, meaning they will now become government teachers,” Sarma said.
He further explained that the teachers would benefit from provisions like the National Pension System (NPS). Additionally, in the unfortunate event of a teacher’s untimely demise, their family will receive a full salary and pension.
The Chief Minister also invited all selected teachers to the Khanapara field in Guwahati on the scheduled date, where the state government will distribute appointment letters. It’s worth noting that earlier, the contractual teachers had protested against this recruitment initiative, demanding full pay protection upon transitioning to regular positions.
