Assam Police Launches Major Crackdown on Illegal Deposit Schemes, 22 Look Out Circulars Issued
Guwahati, September 07, 2024: In a major move against unregulated deposit schemes, Assam Police has formed 14 Special Investigation Teams (SITs) to ensure proper investigation into registered cases. These teams will report directly to the Supervision and Monitoring Group at the Assam CID headquarters, under the leadership of the ADGP and IGP CID.
One of the key cases, Dibrugarh PS Case No. 352/2024, dated September 2, 2024, involving violations of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Scheme Act, 2019, and the Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS) 2023, has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Guwahati. The case, linked to Bishal Phukan, will be investigated by a newly formed SIT to ensure a swift and thorough investigation.
So far, the Assam Police have taken significant actions across 14 districts, registering 28 cases and arresting 59 individuals involved in unregulated deposit schemes. To prevent further evasion, 22 Look Out Circulars (LOCs) have been issued for individuals who failed to cooperate with the investigation despite receiving notices.
The crackdown follows the provisions of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019, and sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita. Assam Police remains committed to addressing such illegal financial activities and holding offenders accountable.
Additionally, Inspector Jitumoni Deka, Officer-in-Charge of Golaghat Police Station, has been suspended with immediate effect. He faces allegations of inappropriate proximity to individuals involved in these schemes, pending the outcome of departmental proceedings.
In another action, Lance Naik Saroj Deka of Assam CID has been dismissed from service under Article 311(2)(b) of the Constitution of India and Rule 10(ii) of the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964. He was found actively involved in unregulated deposit schemes, leading to his removal from service today.
The Assam Police’s decisive steps reflect their commitment to curbing financial crimes, ensuring justice, and upholding the rule of law in the state.
