India-USA Joint Military Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2024 Commences at Mahajan Field Ranges
Desk Report, September 09, 2024: The 20th edition of the India-USA Joint Military Exercise, Yudh Abhyas 2024, has officially started at the Foreign Training Node in Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, Rajasthan. Scheduled from September 9th to 22nd, this joint military drill has grown in scale and complexity, enhancing cooperation between both nations’ armed forces.
Held annually since 2004, Yudh Abhyas alternates between India and the USA. This year’s exercise marks a significant expansion, involving more troops and equipment than before. The Indian Army is represented by 600 personnel from the RAJPUT Regiment, along with other supporting units. Similarly, the US Army contingent includes troops from the Alaska-based 1-24 Battalion of the 11th Airborne Division.
The primary aim of this joint exercise is to strengthen both armies’ capability to conduct counter-terrorism operations. These drills, set in a semi-desert environment, are conducted under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The focus will be on tactical rehearsals, including joint responses to terrorist actions and field exercises that replicate real-world scenarios.
Both armies will exchange best practices, tactics, and procedures, helping to improve coordination in future operations. The exercise is expected to foster inter-operability, enhance camaraderie, and deepen defence cooperation. Ultimately, Yudh Abhyas will further strengthen bilateral ties between India and the United States.
