Maharashtra Deputy Speaker and Legislators Leap from Mantralaya’s Third Floor in Protest, Saved by Safety Net
A tense scene unfolded at Maharashtra’s Mantralaya on Friday when Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal and three legislators jumped from the building’s third floor during a protest. The demonstration was held to oppose the state government’s plan to include the Dhangar community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category.
Narhari Zirwal, a prominent figure from the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), participated in this act along with three other politicians, one of whom was a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). They took the leap from the third floor as part of their protest against the proposed changes.
However, a safety net—installed in 2018 to prevent suicide attempts—proved crucial during the incident. Positioned one floor below, it absorbed their fall and prevented any serious injuries. The legislators landed safely, and no one was hurt.
This dramatic protest highlighted growing tensions over the state’s consideration of the Dhangar community’s inclusion in the ST category, which has sparked heated political debate.
