Assam Leads in Road Safety with Significant Accident Reduction
Assam has emerged as a national leader in road safety by achieving a remarkable 15% reduction in road accidents and fatalities. The state’s focused approach has resulted in many districts reporting fewer accidents, thanks to rigorous enforcement of safety measures following the last review meeting.
Assam stands out as the only major state in India to record such a significant dip in road accident fatalities. The reduction reflects the state’s commitment to improving road safety through consistent efforts.
Chief among the proposed measures is the strict enforcement of the no-drink-and-drive rule. Authorities will intensify checking after 10 PM, especially in Guwahati, to curb drunk driving. The state has planned an intensified road safety drive and monitoring initiative, set to continue until Magh Bihu.
Additionally, the Excise Department has been directed to explore regulating bar timings, aligning them with seasonal needs. To ensure safety in picnic spots, a standard operating procedure (SOP) will be introduced, focusing on cleanliness and public safety.
Efforts to improve infrastructure include installing streetlights, foot overbridges, and reflective patches, particularly in accident-prone areas like the Guwahati Bypass. The Public Works Department (PWD) has also been tasked with incorporating speed breakers, crash barriers, and fluorescent lights in road construction projects.
Special instructions have been issued to district administrations and border district SPs. These include implementing reflective patches on the rear sides of commercial vehicles and launching social media campaigns to spread road safety awareness. Public events will feature road safety videos or dramas to further educate citizens.
Medical colleges and hospitals are being equipped to offer better care to accident victims. Plans include conducting vision tests for commercial drivers and suggesting corrective measures. Security in medical institutions will also be enhanced to protect doctors during emergencies.
The Assam government urges citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and adhere to road safety rules. By ensuring strict monitoring and infrastructure improvements, Assam aims to make its roads safer for everyone.
