Assam Cabinet Announces Key Initiatives: Tea Tourism, Land Rights, Trader Relief, and School Inclusion

Guwahati: In its latest meeting, the Assam Cabinet has introduced significant decisions to drive progress across multiple sectors. These include promoting tea tourism, securing land rights for indigenous communities, supporting small traders, and provincializing educational institutions.

The Cabinet has greenlit two tea tourism projects to boost tourism in the state. The approved sites are Lepetkata Tea Estate in Dibrugarh and Durrung Tea Estate in Sonitpur. This initiative aims to attract more tourists while showcasing Assam’s vibrant tea culture.

To safeguard land rights for indigenous families and public institutions like mandirs and namghars, the Cabinet has taken critical steps. The Deochali PRF in Dibrugarh will not be converted into reserve forest status. Furthermore, public institutions can now submit manual applications under Mission Basundhara until January 31.

In a move to assist small vendors, the Cabinet has exempted vegetable and paan-tamul vendors from paying fees to mahaldars. This decision is expected to provide much-needed financial relief for small-scale traders.

To address the exclusion of genuine educational institutions established before 2006 from the provincialized list, the Cabinet has set up a sub-committee. This committee will evaluate and recommend measures to include such schools within a month, ensuring fair treatment for deserving institutions.

These landmark decisions reflect the Assam government’s focus on boosting tourism, protecting indigenous rights, supporting small businesses, and improving education accessibility.
