Devajit Saikia Appointed BCCI Secretary, Marking a Historic Moment for Assam Cricket

Guwahati: Devajit Saikia, a former cricketer from Assam, has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He succeeds Jay Shah, who left the position after assuming the chairmanship of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This appointment marks a significant milestone for Assam’s cricket community.

The role had remained vacant for over a month before Saikia’s selection. His first official task as BCCI Secretary involved attending a crucial meeting with BCCI President Roger Binny. The meeting focused on evaluating India’s performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Notably, Indian team captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir were also present at the meeting, as reported by various media outlets.

The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) expressed immense pride in Saikia’s achievement, calling it a historic moment for the state’s cricket fraternity. On its official handle on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), ACA shared a congratulatory post, stating, “Assam Cricket Association extends its warmest congratulations to Mr. Devajit Saikia on his election as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).”

The association also emphasized their confidence in Saikia’s leadership, stating that it would further enhance the legacy of Indian cricket. The announcement has been widely celebrated across Assam, with fans and officials lauding Saikia for this prestigious accomplishment.

Saikia’s appointment as BCCI Secretary underscores Assam’s growing prominence in Indian cricket. His dedication and vision are expected to bring positive changes to the administration of cricket in India. The move is seen as a step forward in recognizing the contributions of cricketing talents from the northeast region.

This development not only highlights Saikia’s individual achievement but also brings greater visibility to Assam’s role in shaping Indian cricket.
