Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Leads Republic Day in Dibrugarh with Visionary Initiatives

January 26, 2025: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the 76th Republic Day celebrations in Dibrugarh, making history as the first sitting Chief Minister to do so. Unfurling the Tricolor at the event, Sarma paid tribute to India’s constitutional makers, stating, “On Republic Day, we recall with pride and gratitude the great women and men who worked towards the making of our Constitution.”

The celebrations began on a sustainable note, with the Chief Minister planting 20 saplings at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat premises. He also checked the growth of previously planted saplings, emphasizing his commitment to environmental preservation. Later, Sarma paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Thana Chariali, honoring the Father of the Nation.

During his address, CM Sarma unveiled several visionary initiatives. Chess will soon be integrated into the school curriculum to aid children’s cognitive development. A dedicated Department of Startups will also be established to boost Assam’s innovation ecosystem and encourage entrepreneurship.

Sarma reiterated Assam’s ambitious goal to transition “From Dependent to Contributory,” highlighting the state’s strides toward self-reliance. He lauded Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s contributions, describing him as a beacon of hope who championed equality and dignity for all.

Sarma also shared details about the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, which will focus on key sectors, including infrastructure, renewable energy, tourism, electronics, and logistics. The event aims to attract investments and strengthen Assam’s position in India’s economic landscape.

Further, he celebrated milestones such as the declaration of Assamese as a classical language and the inclusion of Charaideo Moidam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. “These achievements mark a turning point in Assam’s cultural and historical significance,” he said.

The Chief Minister announced a groundbreaking development—the establishment of a semiconductor facility by the Tata Group in Jagiroad. With an investment of ₹27,000 crore, the project is expected to generate 27,000 jobs, positioning Assam as a global hub for chip production.

“Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Assam has evolved from a region once troubled by violence to a symbol of peace and progress,” Sarma stated. He credited the transformation to sustained efforts by the state and central governments.

Highlighting the ‘Year of Reading’ initiative, the CM stressed its success in fostering intellectual curiosity across sectors. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to education as a pillar of Assam’s development strategy.
