Assam Cabinet Orders Probe into Alleged Pakistan Links of Ali Tauqeer Sheikh

Assam Cabinet Initiates Probe into Pakistan-Based Activist’s Alleged Interference
Guwahati; February 17, 2025: The Assam Cabinet has taken serious note of the alleged interference of Pakistan-based climate activist Ali Tauqeer Sheikh in the state’s internal matters. Reports indicate Sheikh made controversial remarks on social media, attempting to disrupt communal harmony in Assam. Additionally, his online activities include extensive commentary on India’s internal affairs, raising concerns about his intentions.
A detailed examination of publicly available data suggests that Sheikh holds strong ties with the Pakistani government. He has reportedly represented Pakistan in international forums and served in advisory roles under the country’s Prime Minister. The Assam Cabinet views these connections with grave concern, given past attempts by Pakistani state and non-state actors to destabilize Assam.
Furthermore, Sheikh’s association with British national Elizabeth Gogoi, the wife of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, has drawn attention. Elizabeth Gogoi, an active member of the global climate action network, previously worked with Sheikh at LEAD Pakistan, a non-profit focused on climate change. Both individuals were also involved with the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), which operates in India and Pakistan. The Assam Cabinet has expressed concerns about such networks potentially influencing India’s internal affairs.
Considering the national security implications, the Assam Cabinet has instructed the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to register a case against Sheikh under the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant laws. Additionally, an extensive inquiry has been ordered to determine whether Sheikh’s actions are part of a broader conspiracy. The investigation aims to identify any supporters or associates aiding his alleged anti-India activities.
The inquiry will focus on:
- Mapping Sheikh’s network in Assam and across India.
- Identifying individuals, organizations, and entities that supported or facilitated his actions.
- Seeking assistance from government agencies to gather intelligence and evidence.
The Assam Cabinet has underscored the need for heightened vigilance, citing Assam’s historical vulnerability to ISI-sponsored activities. The government has assured strict action against any foreign interference that threatens India’s sovereignty and internal stability.
