Assam Ends Char Area Quota in MBBS/BDS Admissions from 2025

Assam Cabinet Revokes MBBS/BDS Admission Quota for Char Areas from 2025-26
Guwahati; March 10, 2025: In a significant policy shift, the Assam Cabinet has approved the revocation of the quota system for MBBS and BDS admissions for students from Char areas. The quota, which was introduced under the Assam MBBS/BDS Admission Rules, 2017 (Amended up to 2024), will no longer be applicable from the 2025-26 academic session onwards.
The quota system was originally introduced to provide opportunities for students from marginalized and underdeveloped regions. By revoking this provision, the Assam government aims to implement a merit-based system for medical admissions.
The revocation will take effect from the 2025-26 academic year, allowing a transition period for students and educational institutions to adapt to the new admission criteria. Further clarifications on how this decision will impact overall seat allocations in Assam’s medical colleges are expected in the coming months.
