Amingaon, February 24, 2024: In commemoration of the 514th birth anniversary of Bir Chilarai, Assam is abuzz with celebrations marking Chilarai Divas. The state comes alive with events honoring his profound contributions to Assamese history.
Chilarai Divas is currently underway with a day-long program at Kumar Bhaskar Barman Kshetra, Amingaon in Guwahati, adding vibrancy to Saturday. This event is a collaborative effort between the Department of Cultural Affairs and the All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Sammelan.
Present at the celebration, MLA Parmananda Rajbanshi passionately called for tribal status to be granted to every ethnic group in Assam. The event witnessed the presence of notable figures, including Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah and BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, both of whom paid heartfelt tributes to Bir Chilarai on this significant occasion.

The date for Chilarai Divas is carefully chosen to coincide with a full moon night in February (Magh), symbolizing the bravery and heroism of the revered general. Since 2005, the Government of Assam has been annually organizing the birth anniversary of Mahabir Chilarai, declaring it a regional public holiday that falls in Phagun Maah of Purnima according to the Hindu calendar.
These celebrations not only pay homage to a historical figure but also serve as a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry that defines Assam. As the festivities continue, the spirit of unity and appreciation for Assamese history resonates across the state.
