United Opposition Forum of Assam Urges President to Repeal Controversial Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA)
Desk Report, February 29, 2024: In a significant move on Thursday, the United Opposition Forum of Assam presented a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu via Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. The central demand echoed in the memorandum is the immediate repeal of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) of 2019, with a specific plea to prevent its implementation in Assam.
The document emphasizes that political parties and the residents of Assam have staunchly opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act since its inception in Parliament. Allegations in the memorandum claim that the ruling BJP government leveraged its parliamentary majority to push through the bill, disregarding the sentiments of Assam’s people.
The memorandum, endorsed by 16 opposition political groups in Assam, underscores recent remarks by the Union Home Minister, who indicated the implementation of CAA in Assam before the Lok Sabha election. According to the opposition, the CAA not only violates the constitution but also jeopardizes the Historic Assam Accord of 1985, putting at risk the history, culture, social fabric, economy, and identity of the Assamese people.
The document directly appeals to the President, stating, “We, the Opposition Political Parties, urge upon you to intervene in this sensitive matter. Direct the Government of India to refrain from implementing the CAA in Assam and promptly repeal this unconstitutional and Anti-National Act.” The memorandum further warns that if the government remains unresponsive, both opposition parties and the residents of Assam will have no choice but to initiate a Democratic Mass Movement to compel the repeal of the Act.
In a concluding note, the memorandum expresses confidence in the President’s constitutional role and appeals for decisive action to safeguard the interests of Assam. The opposition firmly believes that the President’s intervention will be crucial in resolving this contentious issue and preserving the democratic values of the nation.
