Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates Semiconductor Facility in Assam, Paving the Way for Industrial Transformation
Morigaon, March 13, 2024: In a groundbreaking move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam’s Morigaon district, marking a pivotal moment for the region’s industrial landscape. The event, held at the site in Jagiroad, witnessed the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who lauded the occasion as a historic day for Assam and the entire North East.
Modi, emphasizing the significance of the development, asserted, “Today is a landmark day as we are taking a strong step towards a bright future.” The Prime Minister further laid the foundation stone for two semiconductor facilities in Gujarat, underscoring the role of ‘Made in India’ semiconductor chips in propelling the nation towards self-reliance and modernity.
“This massive investment of Rs 27,000 crore marks the first of its kind in the state, positioning Assam and the North East prominently on the industrial map of the country,” remarked Chief Minister Sarma. He attributed this milestone to the visionary initiative of the Prime Minister, heralding a new era of industrial growth in the region.
In an emotional note, Sarma acknowledged the significance of the facility emerging at the site of the Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL), which had previously closed down. “This is an emotional day for the people of Assam. The closure of HPCL left them saddened, but now, a new era of development has dawned,” he expressed.
Sarma, urging the people to remain positive, highlighted that this venture was just the beginning of Assam’s transformation. He stressed, “This is a new Assam, and the people should realize that bandhs or picketing will not help them in any way.”
The ambitious greenfield project by Tata Electronics at Jagiroad entails a whopping investment of Rs 27,000 crore, promising employment opportunities for over 30,000 individuals. The first phase of the facility is anticipated to be operational by mid-2025, fostering optimism for industrial progress in the state.
Expressing gratitude, Sarma commended Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran for this “milestone” and for instilling hope in industrially backward states like Assam. Reflecting on the unexpected journey from proposing a hotel at Kaziranga to witnessing the realization of the semiconductor facility, Sarma emphasized, “We will always be grateful for this significant contribution to our state’s industrial development.”
With the unveiling of this monumental project, Assam is poised to carve its niche in the semiconductor industry, signaling a transformative shift in the region’s economic landscape.
