Abdul Khaleque, MP from Assam’s Barpeta, Resigns from Congress Primary Membership Before Lok Sabha Polls
Barpeta, March 15, 2024: In a significant blow to the Congress party’s morale ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Abdul Khaleque, the Member of Parliament from Barpeta, Assam, has stepped down from the party’s primary membership. Khaleque tendered his resignation to the President of the Indian National Congress (INC), Mallikarjun Kharge, on Friday.
In his resignation letter, Khaleque expressed his concerns about the party’s prioritization of people-centric issues, which he felt have been sidelined. He criticized the attitude and approach of the party’s state President and AICC General Secretary in charge, suggesting that it has adversely affected the party’s prospects in Assam.
Despite his decision to resign, Khaleque expressed gratitude towards the party leaders for entrusting him with responsibilities both within Assam and in other states. He particularly thanked Sonia Gandhi for her leadership and support.

Khaleque emphasized the importance of democracy and the need for people to maintain a sense of independence, self-respect, and unity. However, he lamented that the current trajectory of the party in Assam has strayed from these principles.
“It has been an honor for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation,” Khaleque remarked, expressing his appreciation for the party, its workers, and the people of his constituencies.
Concluding his resignation letter, Khaleque stated, “Therefore, I am tendering my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress with immediate effect,” indicating his decision to step away from the party in light of the current circumstances.
