Sunrisers Hyderabad Sets New IPL Record with 277-3, Defeats Mumbai Indians by 31 Runs
Sports Desk, March 28, 2024: In a dazzling display of power-hitting, Sunrisers Hyderabad achieved the highest-ever total in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, posting an imposing 277-3 against Mumbai Indians. This monumental feat was followed by a thrilling 31-run victory in a match characterized by an astonishing 38 sixes, setting yet another IPL record.
Travis Head of Australia spearheaded Hyderabad’s assault with a blistering 24-ball 62, propelling his team beyond the previous IPL best of 263-5 set by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. Despite a strong response from Mumbai, highlighted by Tilak Varma’s impressive 64 off 34 balls, the pursuit faltered against the mounting run-rate pressure, eventually culminating in a total of 246-5 – the highest-ever score for the Mumbai franchise in the IPL.
Noteworthy performances included Rohit Sharma’s brisk 26 off 12 balls in his 200th IPL appearance, and Ishan Kishan’s 34 at the top of the innings. However, it was Tim David’s unbeaten 42 in the latter stages that provided a late surge for Mumbai, albeit falling short of the mammoth target set by Hyderabad.
The match witnessed a relentless onslaught from Hyderabad’s batsmen, with left-handed duo Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23 balls) and Heinrich Klaasen (80 not out off 34 balls) leading the charge. Aiden Markram’s contribution of 42 further bolstered Hyderabad’s formidable total, as they amassed an unprecedented 148-2 within the first 10 overs.
Despite Mumbai’s efforts, the young South African bowler Kwena Maphaka endured a torrid introduction to the IPL, conceding 66 runs in his four overs. Hyderabad’s skipper Pat Cummins, however, proved to be the standout bowler, claiming figures of 2-35 to guide his team to their first victory of the season.
With both teams seeking redemption following opening-match defeats, the clash between five-time champions Mumbai and Hyderabad promised a riveting contest. Ultimately, it was Hyderabad who emerged triumphant, marking a historic chapter in the annals of IPL cricket with a record-breaking display of batting prowess.
