Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck Visits Sonahat, Assam on Indo-Bangladesh Border Following Economic Talks in Bangladesh
Agomani, March 28, 2024: His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan arrived at Sonahat, Assam today, marking his entrance into India through gate 1009 from Kurigram, Bangladesh. The royal visit follows economic discussions between Bangladesh and Bhutan, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposing the establishment of a special financial zone in Kurigram during a bilateral meeting in London in 2023.
Upon his arrival, the King of Bhutan received a warm reception from the Dhubri district administration and the Golakganj border customs department. All pertinent documents were meticulously examined at the border.
Earlier developments reveal that the District Administration of Kurigram has allocated 133.92 acres of private land to the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority. Today, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck visited the designated Economic Zone site in Kurigram before crossing into India via Sonahat.
During his stay at the border, the Bhutanese monarch engaged in discussions with senior Border Security Force officials and the Dhubri District Commissioner. After the exchange of views and formalities, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck is expected to travel back to Bhutan by land.
The visit underscores the growing economic ties and cooperation between Bangladesh and Bhutan and highlights the significance of the proposed financial zone in Kurigram as a potential hub for bilateral economic activities.
