Tragic Incident Unfolds in Karimganj: Mother Allegedly Kills Three Children and Attempts Suicide
Silchar, April 09, 2024: In a devastating turn of events, a mother identified as Shahena Afroz residing in Dalunga village adjacent to Ramakrishna Nagar in Karimganj has been accused of ending the lives of her three young children before allegedly attempting to take her own life. The incident, which has shocked the local community, unfolded early in the morning of April 07, shattering what was previously described as a harmonious family life.
According to initial reports, the day began like any other for the family of Shahena Afroz. Her husband, Sharif Uddin, left for work as usual, leaving Shahena, her sister-in-law, and the three children at home. However, the tranquility of the morning was soon disrupted by the sound of Shahena scolding one of her children, prompting concerned villagers to intervene.
Upon entering the household, villagers were met with a harrowing scene. The lifeless bodies of Shahena’s three children lay upon a bed, while her younger sister-in-law was found injured on the ground. Shahena herself was discovered in another room, unconscious and surrounded by blood, suggesting a desperate attempt at taking her own life.
Prompt action from the community saw the injured sister-in-law and Shahena rushed to the Ramakrishna Nagar Primary Health Centre for urgent medical attention. Tragically, despite efforts to save them, the three children—identified as Shahjahan Ahmed (2), Sukiyan Ahmed (4), and Majida Begum (6)—were pronounced deceased at the scene. The surviving sister, Sharmin Begum, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical care.
Local residents speculate that the horrific incident may have stemmed from a family dispute, although concrete details surrounding the motive remain unclear. Police have initiated an investigation into the matter to ascertain the events leading up to the tragedy and uncover any underlying causes.
The loss of three innocent lives and the attempted suicide of their mother has cast a pall of sorrow over the tight-knit community of Dalunga village.
