Taking inspiration from the Chicago protests, international demonstrations were suggested at a meeting in Paris in 1889 and this marked the beginning of observing May Day as a yearly event by the International’s 2nd Congress in 1891. In India, the first ever celebration of May Day was held in Chennai on May 1, 1923 by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan led by Comrade Singaravelar.
