Police Crack Down on Snatching Gang Operating Across Guwahati City
Guwahati, May 04, 2024: A swift response by the Dispur Police Station has led to the apprehension of a notorious snatching gang, following a report from a woman on April 24, 2024. The victim reported that two unidentified boys on a scooter snatched her bag, containing a mobile phone and cash, at Survey Samannay path under Dispur Police Station. Despite limited information provided by the victim, including no details of the culprits or the scooter, a case (No. 352/24) under sections 356/379/323 IPC was promptly registered, initiating a thorough investigation.
Utilizing technical analysis and intelligence, a joint team comprising Dispur Police Station and the Special Operation Group of East Police District conducted extensive search operations in Guwahati and Tamulpur areas. This concerted effort resulted in the successful apprehension of several individuals: Rupam Ali of Morigaon, Dipak Barman of Tamulpur, Rahul Sutradhar of Barpeta, Nisha Barman of Tamulpur, and Rahul Das of Kumarikata, Tamulpur. Notably, Rupam Ali, Dipak Barman, and Rahul Sutradhar have a history of involvement in snatching incidents across greater Guwahati.
Further interrogation revealed the gang’s modus operandi, with Rupam Ali, Dipak Barman, and Rahul Sutradhar operating as snatchers in Guwahati, while Rahul Das facilitated the sale of stolen items from his shop in Tamulpur. Nisha Barman acted as an intermediary in delivering the stolen phones to Rahul Das. A significant haul of 49 mobile phones and two scooters, both confirmed stolen, were seized during the search operations.
The investigation is ongoing, with additional names surfacing during interrogation. Police are actively pursuing leads to apprehend further suspects associated with the gang. The apprehension of this gang sheds light on recent snatching incidents in Guwahati city, underscoring the authorities’ commitment to maintaining law and order. Legal action is underway, with efforts ongoing to dismantle the criminal network and ensure public safety.
