ECI Imposes ‘Dry Days’ Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections in Assam: Liquor Sale and Consumption Banned in Four Constituencies
Desk Report, May 05, 2024: In preparation for the forthcoming Lok Sabha election phase in Assam, the Election Commission of India has announced a period of ‘dry days’ from 5 p.m. on May 05 to 5 p.m. on May 07, 2024. This measure is in effect for the four parliamentary constituencies of Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Barpeta, and Guwahati, where voting is scheduled to take place on May 07, 2024.
The directive extends to the day of vote counting on June 04, 2024. Furthermore, in the event of a repoll in any of the aforementioned constituencies, the stipulated dry days will commence 48 hours prior to the conclusion of voting in the respective constituency or constituencies.
During this period, a blanket prohibition is imposed on the operation of wholesale warehouses, bonded warehouses, IMFL retail ‘off and on’ shops, as well as the sale and consumption of liquor and other contraband in hotels falling under the jurisdictions of the designated Lok Sabha constituencies. Any violation of this order will be subject to stringent action under the relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act and Rules, as well as Section 135-C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The imposition of dry days underscores the Election Commission’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and fairness of the electoral process, ensuring a conducive environment for free and fair voting in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election phase in Assam.
