Iswar Prasanna Hazarika, Former Tezpur MP and Renowned Academic, Passes Away at 88
Desk Report, May 13, 2024: Iswar Prasanna Hazarika, a distinguished academic, seasoned professional, and former Member of Parliament representing the Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency of Assam, breathed his last today at 9:30 am at the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in New Delhi. His demise, confirmed by the hospital management, was attributed to complications arising from a prolonged heart ailment.
Hazarika, aged 88 at the time of his passing, was a stalwart figure with an illustrious career spanning academia, governance, and corporate leadership. Residing in Delhi/Noida for over five decades, his academic journey was marked by notable achievements. He excelled in his Matriculation and pursued higher education at prestigious institutions such as Cotton College, Banaras Hindu University, and the Delhi School of Economics. His academic pursuits culminated in a Barrister Degree from the United Kingdom, further augmented by his membership at Lincoln’s Inn.
Throughout his professional tenure, Hazarika held eminent positions across various sectors, showcasing his versatile expertise. Notable roles include Chairman and Managing Director of MMTC, Director on the Board of NTPC, Chairman of ASEB, and senior positions within GAIL and SAIL. His astute leadership also extended to public service, where he served as an Income Tax Commissioner and held significant roles in governance.
Hazarika’s political journey saw him representing the Tezpur Constituency in the Lok Sabha from May 1996 to December 1997. Born in 1937 to Tirtheswar Hazarika, a distinguished lawyer and freedom fighter, and Mokshada Devi, Hazarika’s lineage was deeply rooted in the Indian independence movement, reflecting his commitment to national progress and development.
The funeral rites for Iswar Prasanna Hazarika are scheduled to take place at the Lodhi Cremation Ground at 5 PM, where family, friends, and colleagues will bid a solemn farewell to a remarkable individual whose contributions to society and governance will be remembered with utmost reverence and gratitude.
