Thaneswar Boro, Former Assam Education and Revenue Minister, Dies at 86
Guwahati, May 17, 2024: Thaneswar Boro, former Assam education and revenue minister and a prominent figure in the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), passed away at the age of 86 today at 7:05 a.m. Boro, who was being treated for a severe heart condition, died at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Boro had been admitted to Swasti Hospital in Rangia on May 9 after his health deteriorated significantly. He was later transferred to the intensive care unit of GMCH as his condition worsened. Despite the efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his illness this morning.
His mortal remains will be transported to Rangia from Guwahati, where various parties and organizations are expected to pay tribute to the veteran politician.
Thaneswar Boro was a founding member of the Asom Gana Parishad in 2016 and served as an influential leader within the party. Known for his contributions to education and revenue sectors in Assam, Boro had faced multiple health challenges in recent years. In July 2023, during a previous hospitalization, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had sent cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah to monitor his condition and report on his health status.
The Assam administration had also shown its support for Boro last year by committing to cover the costs of his medical treatment. His passing marks the end of an era for the AGP and the state of Assam, as he leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service.
Condolences have begun to pour in from political leaders, colleagues, and well-wishers, all mourning the loss of a stalwart who played a crucial role in shaping Assam’s political landscape.
