Lucknow Super Giants End IPL 2024 with Dominant Victory Over Mumbai Indians, Who Finish Last
Sports Desk, May 18, 2024: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) signed off their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign with a decisive 18-run win against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday. Mumbai Indians, finishing last in the 10-team league, garnered only 8 points from their 14 matches.
Batting first, LSG posted an imposing total of 214 for 6, thanks to a pivotal 109-run partnership between captain KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran. Rahul anchored the innings with a composed 55 off 41 balls, while Pooran provided the fireworks, scoring a blistering 75 off just 29 balls. The innings saw Rahul steady the ship initially alongside Marcus Stoinis, who contributed 28 runs, after the early dismissal of Devdutt Padikkal for a duck. Pooran’s aggressive innings featured eight sixes and five boundaries, significantly boosting LSG’s total.
Mumbai Indians’ bowlers, Piyush Chawla and Nuwan Thusara, were the standout performers with the ball. Chawla recorded figures of 3 for 29, while Thusara also claimed three wickets, conceding 28 runs.
In response, MI managed to score 196 for 6, falling short despite valiant efforts from skipper Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir. Sharma led from the front with a swift 68 off 38 balls, and Dhir’s late surge, yielding 62 off 28 balls, gave MI a glimmer of hope. However, regular wickets from LSG’s bowlers thwarted their chase.
The victory for LSG highlights their competitive spirit, even as they concluded their IPL 2024 journey. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians will reflect on a disappointing season, marked by their position at the bottom of the league standings.
