Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar Murdered in Kolkata: Investigation Reveals Gruesome Details
Desk Report, May 24, 2024: Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar arrived in Kolkata on May 12 for medical treatment. Staying with his friend Gopal Biswas, Anar went missing a few days later. He was last seen at a high-end apartment complex in New Town, on the outskirts of Kolkata. Authorities believe he was murdered, his body skinned, chopped up, and the remains disposed of across the city.
The investigation into Anar’s disappearance and murder is being jointly conducted by police in Kolkata and Dhaka. The key questions are: Who killed Mr. Anar? Why? Where did he go on May 14?
Kolkata police have made progress in identifying a suspect. Jihad Hawladar, an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant, has been arrested. He confessed to his involvement in the murder and dismemberment of Anar’s body.
Dhaka police have also provided crucial information. They are investigating Shilasti Rahman, a woman suspected of luring Anar to his death. Evidence suggests that Anar fell into a ‘honey trap’. CCTV footage shows Anar entering the apartment with a woman, believed to be Rahman. She has been detained by Dhaka police.
In a significant breakthrough, Kolkata police arrested Jihad Hawladar on Friday morning. He directed them to four other Bangladeshi nationals who may have participated in the murder. Among them is Akhtaruzzaman, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, who is thought to be the mastermind. He allegedly paid ₹5 crore to Anar’s killers. Akhtaruzzaman’s current location is unknown, but authorities suspect he might be in the US.
The apartment where Anar was likely murdered and dismembered was rented by a friend of Akhtaruzzaman. The owner is a state government employee. Details from the investigation reveal a meticulously planned and executed crime. Hawladar claimed he and his accomplices skinned Anar’s body, minced the flesh to hinder identification, and cut the bones into small pieces. These remains were then packed into plastic bags and scattered across Kolkata. Some body parts were reportedly stored in a refrigerator before disposal. CCTV footage also shows one of the suspects leaving the apartment with a large suitcase.
The investigation continues as police in both cities work to piece together the full story behind this horrific crime.
