Toll Charges to Increase on National Highways Starting Monday
Desk Report, June 03, 2024: Starting today, motorists traversing expressways will encounter increased toll charges as the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) enforces a nationwide fee hike averaging 5 percent. Originally slated for April 1, the annual revision of highway user fees was postponed due to the Lok Sabha elections.
A senior NHAI official has confirmed that the adjusted toll rates will now come into effect from June 3, 2024. This annual adjustment aligns toll charges with fluctuations in the wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation, ensuring consistency with economic shifts.
The national highway network, comprising approximately 855 user fee plazas, dictates toll charges in accordance with the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules 2008. Among these, approximately 675 toll plazas receive public funding, while the management of 180 plazas falls under concessionaires.
This customary annual procedure underscores NHAI’s commitment to maintaining the financial sustainability of the national highway infrastructure while adapting to inflationary trends. Motorists are advised to prepare for the updated toll rates as they plan their travels on the nation’s extensive expressway network.
