Detained Khalistani Leader Amritpal Singh Secures Resounding Electoral Victory Despite Incarceration
Desk Report, June 05, 2024: Following his electoral triumph on June 4, Amritpal Singh, recently elected as Member of Parliament from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab, received a visit from his wife and legal counsel at Dibrugarh Jail, Assam. Singh, the detained leader of ‘Waris Punjab De,’ was accompanied by his lawyer, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, who shared insights into their next course of action.
Khalsa asserted, “The further strategy is of getting bail. The government has to release him, they have no alternative,” underlining Singh’s dedication to combating drug abuse in Punjab. He emphasized, “Amritpal Singh was making Punjab drug-free. The people have approved that his arrest was illegal and immoral.”
This visit coincides with mounting demands for Singh’s release, with supporters decrying his detention as unjust and contrary to the electorate’s will. Despite his incarceration, Singh clinched a decisive victory in Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat, triumphing over Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira by a significant margin of 197,120 votes, as confirmed by the Election Commission on Tuesday, June 4.
Campaigning from his jail cell in Assam, Singh secured an impressive 404,430 votes, surpassing Zira’s 207,310 votes. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Laljit Singh Bhullar, trailed in third place with 194,836 votes. Singh, also the head of ‘Waris Punjab De,’ was apprehended last year during a major crackdown and remains detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam.
Despite his ongoing imprisonment, Singh’s victory is underscored by the issuance of his election certificate to family members by the Returning Officer for the Khadoor Sahib constituency, marking a significant political triumph.
