Tragedy Strikes in Jammu and Kashmir as Pilgrim Bus Plunges into Gorge Following Suspected Terrorist Attack
Desk Report, June 10, 2024: In a devastating incident on Sunday, a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir plunged into a gorge, reportedly following an attack by suspected terrorists. Preliminary reports indicate fears of multiple casualties.
The Reasi Deputy Commissioner, currently en route to the scene, has confirmed the bus’s descent into the gorge, though additional details remain forthcoming. Reasi’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohita Sharma, along with a police contingent, has swiftly mobilized to the location to oversee the ongoing rescue operations.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was traveling from Ransoo near Shiv Khori—a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva—towards Katra town, which serves as a critical base camp for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine in the Trikuta hills. The vehicle, bearing a Jammu and Kashmir registration, was transporting a significant number of pilgrims at the time of the incident.
According to initial accounts, two masked assailants opened fire on the bus near Kanda Chandi Morh, critically injuring the driver. This assault is believed to have caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and plunging into the gorge.
The area, situated on the border of Reasi and Rajouri districts, has a history of terrorist activities. This latest incident has prompted a rapid response from law enforcement and security personnel, who are currently engaged in a rescue operation to assist the victims.
