Assam Police Mourns the Tragic Demise of Senior Officer Shiladitya Chetia
Guwahati, June 18, 2024: The Assam Police force is in profound mourning following the tragic death of Shiladitya Chetia, an IPS officer from the 2009 batch, who served as the Secretary of Home & Political Government of Assam. The deeply distressing incident has cast a pall over the entire department and the community it serves.
Assam Director General of Police Gyanendra Pratap Singh, expressing deep sorrow on behalf of the force, took to his official ‘X’ handle to convey the heartbreaking news. “In an unfortunate turn of events, Sri Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home & Political Government of Assam, took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife, who was battling cancer for a long time. The entire Assam Police family is in deep grief,” DGP Singh stated.
Reports indicate that Shiladitya Chetia allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati. The circumstances surrounding this tragic event are currently under investigation. According to sources, Chetia used his service revolver to end his life, shortly after his wife’s passing earlier in the day.
Chetia’s wife had been battling cancer for an extended period, a struggle that deeply affected him. The loss of his spouse reportedly led him to take this irrevocable step while at the hospital.
Throughout his career, Shiladitya Chetia served with distinction, previously holding the positions of Superintendent of Police in the Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts of Assam. His dedication and service earned him respect and recognition within the force and the communities he served.
The untimely death of Shiladitya Chetia has left a significant void in the Assam Police force. The entire community extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues during this profoundly difficult time.
