Assam Police Ready to Implement New Criminal Laws, Collaborates with PIB for Media Workshop
Guwahati, June 26, 2024: In an effort to enhance understanding and awareness of the newly enacted criminal laws, the Press Information Bureau, Guwahati, in collaboration with the Assam Police, organized a significant media workshop today for journalists based in Guwahati. The workshop focused on familiarizing media persons with the intricacies of three pivotal legislations: Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, slated for implementation from July 1, 2024.
The event, graced by Shri Gyanendra Pratap Singh, DGP of Assam, saw participation from over 200 officers of the Assam Police who have already undergone specialized training in criminal forensic science. Addressing the media, Shri Singh emphasized the preparedness of Assam Police to effectively implement the new laws, underscoring their alignment with contemporary societal needs.
Keynote speaker Shri Munna Prasad Gupta, ADGP of CID Assam, delivered a comprehensive analysis of the legislative reforms, highlighting their implications on the judicial landscape. He emphasized significant amendments aimed at prioritizing victim rights, particularly for women and children, and integrating advanced technologies into the judicial process. Notably, the inclusion of community service as an alternative to conventional punishments for minor offenses was also highlighted.
Shri Gupta emphasized that the legislative updates are geared towards ensuring expeditious and equitable justice delivery, with provisions recognizing digital evidence on par with physical evidence. He stressed that the new laws pivot towards a justice-centric approach rather than mere punitive measures.
In his welcome address, Shri K. Satish Nambudiripad, DG of NE Zone, lauded the evolving philosophy in criminal justice, emphasizing improved accessibility and transparency in legal proceedings. He acknowledged the pivotal role of journalists in disseminating crucial information and fostering public understanding of legal reforms.
The workshop, attended by journalists from diverse media outlets, provided an interactive platform for clarifications and insights into the practical application of the new laws. Ms. Jane Namchu, Additional Director General of PIB, facilitated a rigorous Q&A session, enhancing clarity on the nuances of the legislative changes.
The collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Assam Police, and media stakeholders underscored a concerted endeavor to promote informed discourse and public awareness on the evolving legal landscape.
