“Kalki 2898 AD”: A Chaotic Saga of Power, Conflict, and Unfulfilled Potential
Desk Report, June 28, 2024: In the dystopian world of “Kalki 2898 AD,” where chaos reigns supreme, the narrative centers around a powerful figure portrayed by Kamal Haasan, who seeks a serum obtained from a fertile woman. The storyline primarily explores the motivations behind this quest, the conflict between Bhairava (Prabhas) and Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan), and their collective efforts to rescue Sumathi (Deepika Padukone).
Prabhas, in the role of Bhairava, surprisingly feels more like an extended cameo rather than a central protagonist—a revelation that raises questions about director Nagi’s vision. Despite promises of a sequel, the current film, spanning three hours, fails to fully develop Bhairava’s character satisfactorily. His intermittent appearances and sporadic involvement, punctuated by occasional banter with Bujji, leave much to be desired in terms of character depth and continuity. Bhairava’s defining trait appears limited to his penchant for subtle humor, which fails to establish a compelling persona until the climactic twenty minutes, where Prabhas’s charisma finally makes a lasting impression.
Conversely, Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of Ashwatthama stands out as the film’s strongest asset. His commanding screen presence and impeccable performance elevate the narrative, especially in action sequences impeccably executed by the production team. Despite Kamal Haasan’s captivating makeup, his impactful presence feels underutilized, hinting at potentially greater significance in future installments.
Deepika Padukone, portraying a pregnant laboratory subject, delivers a nuanced performance, though her character’s development amidst the backdrop of scientific intrigue remains underexplored. Her screen presence remains a steady anchor throughout, though lacking standout moments. Disha Patani’s role as Roxie, despite ample screen time, remains forgettable within the narrative.
Overall, “Kalki 2898 AD” presents a visually arresting world with promising elements that often fall short in character development and narrative cohesion. While Amitabh Bachchan shines brightly, the film leaves audiences eagerly anticipating resolutions promised in future installments, potentially offering deeper insights into its sprawling dystopian universe.
