Assam Chief Minister Inspects Flood-Affected Areas in Golaghat, Ensures Timely Relief and Rehabilitation
Guwahati, July 03, 2024: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the flood-affected areas of Bokakhat in Golaghat district, ensuring the residents of prompt relief and rehabilitation efforts. Dr. Sarma’s visit included a detailed inspection of the breached embankment by boat and an assessment of the overall flood situation.
During his visit, Dr. Sarma observed the extensive damage caused by the breach of a 13-kilometer dam, which has displaced approximately 72 villages along with multiple schools and colleges. To address the urgent needs of the affected residents, Dr. Sarma assured that immediate relief arrangements would be made. He visited a temporary shelter camp at Kamargaon HS School in Golaghat to evaluate the ongoing relief efforts and stressed that the embankment would be rebuilt swiftly to facilitate the return of displaced residents.
The Chief Minister directed the Golaghat Administration to ensure that all necessary amenities are provided to the shelter camp residents, aiming to mitigate any inconvenience.
Following his inspection in Bokakhat, Dr. Sarma proceeded to the office of the Forest Range Officer at Bagori in Kaziranga. There, he witnessed wildlife seeking refuge from the floodwaters, including porcupines, deer, and buffalo. In discussions with top officials from the Kaziranga National Park Authority, District Administration, and Police Administration, he reviewed the flood’s impact on the national park and the measures needed for wildlife protection.
Kaziranga National Park has seen 163 forest camps inundated due to rising water levels. To address this, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and mobile veterinarians have been deployed to rescue and assist the flood-affected animals. Dr. Sarma also noted that personnel from the 3rd Assam Forest Battalion undergoing training in Dergaon would be deployed if necessary, ensuring the protection of wildlife during the floods.
Furthermore, discussions were held with the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Karbi Anglong district, as well as the administration of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, to prevent any illegal activities that could threaten wildlife entering the Karbi Hills from the national park during the floods.
The Chief Minister’s visit underscores the state government’s commitment to providing timely assistance and ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and wildlife in the flood-affected areas.
