Assam Cabinet Meeting: Key Decisions on Flood Relief, SC/ST Aspirants, and Healthcare Initiatives
Guwahati, July 04, 2024: The Assam cabinet convened for its weekly meeting on Wednesday, where significant decisions were taken amid escalating flood concerns and other pressing issues. Key among these decisions was the exemption of examination fees for SC/ST students aspiring for government service positions, aimed at bolstering their participation in competitive exams under the Government of Assam.
In a bid to enhance healthcare accessibility, the cabinet also approved the operationalization of 37 new hemodialysis centers across the state. These centers, equipped with 150 additional hemodialysis machines, will be established under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, supported by corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The move comes as the state government endeavors to expand its current network of 41 centers, which conducted over 2,21,116 free dialysis sessions during the 2023-24 period.
Further emphasizing healthcare advancements, the cabinet endorsed the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) involving the Government of Assam, Tata Education and Development Trusts (TEDT), and the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF). This MoU aims to ensure world-class cancer care across 17 hospitals, with nine facilities already operational and eight more under development in key districts including Diphu, Dhubri, and Tinsukia. The projected cost for this initiative totals Rs 3,983 crore, with Rs 2,803 crore funded by the state government and the remaining Rs 1,180 crore contributed by TEDT. This collaborative effort seeks to maintain affordable yet comprehensive cancer treatment options for patients in Assam and the surrounding regions.
Additionally, the cabinet’s decision to hand over the Bordikorai case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) underscores its commitment to addressing critical legal matters effectively. These measures reflect the government’s proactive approach in tackling healthcare challenges and fostering inclusive opportunities for marginalized communities across Assam.
