Major Embankment Project Announced to Strengthen Assam’s Water Infrastructure
Guwahati, July 07, 2024: In a significant move to bolster Assam’s water infrastructure, Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika announced the commencement of an extensive embankment construction project. The declaration was made during a meeting at the Darrang District Commissioner’s office.
Minister Pijush Hazarika outlined that the Water Resources Department will initiate the construction of 220 kilometers of embankments post-monsoon. Of this, 26 kilometers will be specifically constructed in the Darrang district. He further detailed the project’s timeline, stating that once the 220 kilometers are completed, only 100 kilometers will remain, with the completion expected by the next year.
Addressing the challenges faced by residents living between the river and the embankments, Minister Hazarika acknowledged the severe impact of floods on these communities. However, he noted that special arrangements for these populations could not be made at this time.
The announcement followed a review meeting held at the Darrang Commissioner’s Office. Minister Pijush Hazarika was accompanied by Dilip Saikia, MP of the Darrang-Udalguri constituency, Parmananda Rajbanshi, MLA of Sipajhar Constituency, Basanta Das, MLA of Mangaldoi Constituency, and various departmental officers.
This ambitious project aims to mitigate the recurrent flood issues and improve the overall water management infrastructure in Assam, promising significant relief and development for the affected regions.
