Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi Visits Flood-Affected Assam and Relief Camp in Manipur
Silchar, July 08, 2024: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday visited flood-affected regions in Assam’s Cachar district before heading to the state of Manipur later in the day. Upon his arrival in Silchar, Gandhi was greeted by Congress leaders from both Assam and Manipur at the airport.
In Fulertal, Gandhi engaged with individuals residing in relief camps due to the catastrophic floods. This visit marks Gandhi’s first to the Northeast since assuming his role as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The relief camp is situated along the route Gandhi took to Manipur’s Jiribam district.
Assam is currently grappling with severe floods triggered by torrential rains, resulting in landslides and overflowing rivers. The calamity has impacted approximately 2.27 million people across 28 districts. Following his visit to Jiribam, Gandhi is scheduled to return to Silchar airport before flying to Imphal for the next phase of his tour in Manipur.
Expressing his deep sorrow and concern over the dire flood situation in Assam, Gandhi conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims. In a social media post, he stated, “The extreme devastation caused by flooding in Assam is heartbreaking – with innocent children like 8-year-old Avinash being taken away from us. My heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families across the state.”
Gandhi also underscored the urgent need for a pan-Northeast water management authority to implement effective long-term flood control measures. He emphasized, “Assam needs a comprehensive and compassionate vision – proper relief, rehabilitation, and compensation in the short term, and a pan-Northeast water management authority to do everything necessary to control floods in the long term.”
