Government of India Declares June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to Honor Victims of the 1975 Emergency
Desk Report, July 12, 2024: The BJP-led central government has declared June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’. This day honors those who endured the hardships imposed during the Emergency declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the significance of this day on social media. He stated, “On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced.” He emphasized that the government aims to remember the sacrifices of those who suffered during that period.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed Shah’s sentiments. Sharing Shah’s post, Modi said that observing June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ will remind citizens of a time when the Indian Constitution was trampled. He noted, “It is also a day to pay homage to each and every person who suffered due to the excesses of the Emergency, a Congress-unleashed dark phase of Indian history.”
This declaration aims to keep the memory of the Emergency alive and ensure that such a breach of democratic principles is never repeated.
