PM Modi Approves Rs 5729 Crore Guwahati Ring Road Project
Guwahati, August 03, 2024: In a significant move to enhance regional connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the construction of the 121 km, 4-lane, access-controlled Guwahati Ring Road at a cost of Rs 5729 crore. This project is poised to provide an alternative route across the Brahmaputra River and other North Eastern states, bolstering the region’s infrastructure.
The Guwahati Ring Road project will be executed under the Build-Operate-Toll (BOT) model and encompasses three major components. The first component is the construction of a 56-kilometer 4-lane Access-Controlled Northern Guwahati Bypass. The second involves widening an existing 4-lane bypass on NH 27 to 6 lanes over an 8-kilometer stretch. The final component includes improvements to the remaining 58 kilometers of the existing bypass on NH 27.
A pivotal addition to this project is a major bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which will significantly enhance connectivity across the region. Upon completion, the Guwahati Ring Road will offer seamless connectivity for long-distance traffic on National Highway 27, a crucial route in the East-West Corridor.
This initiative is expected to alleviate congestion on major highways around Guwahati, thereby improving access to key cities and towns such as Siliguri, Silchar, Shillong, Jorhat, Tezpur, Jogigopha, and Barpeta. The enhanced infrastructure will not only facilitate smoother travel but also contribute to the economic development of the North Eastern region.
