BSF Tightens Security at Indo-Bangladesh Border Amid Student Protests in Bangladesh
Dhubri, August 05, 2024: The Border Security Force (BSF) has significantly intensified security measures along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Dhubri district in response to ongoing student protests in Bangladesh. The heightened vigilance, part of an operation termed “Operation Alert,” commenced on Monday following the sudden resignation and departure of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Prime Minister Hasina’s resignation has triggered widespread unrest and instability in Bangladesh, prompting the BSF to take proactive steps to secure the international border. Additional BSF jawans have been deployed to prevent any potential spillover of the chaos into Indian territory, ensuring the safety and stability of the border region.
As part of the tightened security, import and export activities through the Sonahat Land Customs Station (LCS) have been halted since Monday. This suspension has left hundreds of boulder-laden trucks stranded near Sonahat LCS. Local sources have reported that several Indian trucks that had entered Bangladesh through Sonahat LCS are now stuck in the neighboring country due to the unrest, unable to return.
“The abrupt halt in cross-border trade has caused significant disruption for the local economy, which relies heavily on the movement of goods between India and Bangladesh. Truck drivers and businesses are facing uncertainty as they wait for the situation to stabilize,” said Rafique Ali, an exporter at Lakhimari.
The BSF’s “Operation Alert” involves increased patrolling, the establishment of additional checkpoints, and the deployment of advanced surveillance equipment to monitor the border area more effectively. These measures are designed to prevent any unauthorized crossings and to maintain peace and order amidst the turmoil in Bangladesh.
Local residents near the border have expressed concerns about the potential for the unrest to spill over into Indian territory. Many are hopeful that the increased security presence will deter any attempts at illegal crossings and protect the community from any adverse effects of the unrest in Bangladesh.
With the situation in Bangladesh remaining volatile, the BSF’s intensified security measures are crucial in maintaining stability and safeguarding the border region.
