AASU Launches State-Wide Protests Against Irregular Electricity Supply in Assam
Guwahati, May 30, 2024: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) orchestrated widespread protests throughout Assam today, vehemently opposing recent issues of irregular electricity supply and price hikes instigated by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). Demonstrations erupted in various regions, including Hajo, Biswanath, Mushalpur, Udalguri, and Rangiya, as part of AASU’s state-wide campaign against the electricity department.
Protesters, bearing placards with slogans such as “Electricity Department Murdabad” and “Regularise electricity at the earliest,” demanded immediate intervention from the Assam government to regularize electricity supply. The rallies were marked by the burning of effigies representing the APDCL and the Electricity Department, symbolizing the public’s profound dissatisfaction and disapproval.
In Kamrup district, Surajit Kalita, Vice President of the All Kamrup District Students Union, criticized the government’s management of the electricity sector. “The Assam government, which boasts of development, has utterly failed to regularize electricity. This is unacceptable,” he stated during the protest.
The unrest was particularly palpable in Biswanath Chariali, where demonstrators burned an effigy of the Minister of Power in front of the APDCL Sub-Division office. The Baska AASU leadership echoed this sentiment, branding the state’s Minister of Power as “incompetent and ineligible.” They called for her resignation, urging that the responsibility of the department be transferred to a more capable individual.
In Rangiya, under the leadership of President Neetu Rajbongshi and General Secretary Nabojit Kalita, AASU members burned an effigy of the APDCL at Tarani on the Indo-Bhutan International Road. The protest prompted a swift response from the local police, with officers from the Tulshibari Police Outpost arriving on the scene to restore order.
