Jorhat, February 12, 2024: Bhupen Borah, the president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), made his second appearance before Jorhat Police today. He was summoned for questioning regarding allegations of diverting the route and causing disturbances during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi.
Following the interrogation, Borah accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of targeting the opposition. He affirmed the party’s resilience against such tactics, stating, “Our party has grown amidst struggle. I too have reached this stage amidst struggle. This kind of tactics cannot deter us, they cannot scare our party workers.”
It’s notable that Borah had previously been summoned by Jorhat Police on January 31 and had declared his decision not to seek anticipatory bail if arrested.
Moreover, Borah expressed dissatisfaction with the police’s actions, highlighting their failure to address the individuals who assaulted him during the yatra. He criticized the police’s approach, stating, “Assam Police has lost its direction.”
Regarding the case, Borah was summoned twice under Section 41(A) of CrPC, with charges including criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, and use of criminal force under IPC, along with relevant charges under the PDPP Act.
