Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court Grants Bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Money Laundering Case
Desk Report, June 21, 2024: In a significant legal development, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court granted bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday in connection with a money laundering case associated with the now-cancelled liquor policy. The bail order was reserved and subsequently passed earlier yesterday by Vacation Judge Nyay Bindu.
Despite the Enforcement Directorate (ED) requesting a 48-hour period to seek legal remedies, the judge declined to stay the bail order. Kejriwal is expected to be released from Tihar Jail on Friday upon furnishing a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh.
This marks the second instance of a prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader securing bail in this case, following Sanjay Singh. However, former Delhi Minister Manish Sisodia remains in custody.
Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED on March 21 occurred amidst considerable drama ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Initially granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in May due to the electoral context, Kejriwal subsequently surrendered on June 2.
During the court proceedings, the ED alleged possessing evidence of Kejriwal’s involvement in demanding Rs 100 crore in kickbacks related to the liquor policy. The agency further claimed that funds from these kickbacks were used to finance AAP’s election campaign in Goa.
